The suites
Each one, named
All 4, each one named. They share the same comforts and differ in layout, light and outlook.
01
Dal
the lake
A king bed under a floral pelmet, with a bench at the foot of it for the bag you never quite unpack.
Lamplight against the sheers, and the garden going dark behind them.
A desk with windows on two sides and light from both. If you must work, work here.
The washroom
Dark stone, and a mirror lit from behind — flattering at any hour you care to face it.
The tub beneath the window, in full daylight. Run it at four in the afternoon.
Basin and tub side by side against dark stone, and the door shut on everything else.
02
Nigeen
the quieter lake
A king bed between two lights, on timber floors that take the chill out of a Kashmiri morning.
A deep green sofa piled with cushions. This is where the afternoon goes.
Turned down for the evening, with the armchair by the window still free.
The window swung open onto the garden, and the mountains behind it doing the rest.
The washroom
Dark stone, concealed light, and nothing at all to break the quiet.
The tub beneath the window, lit low for the evening.
03
Wular
the great lake
A plum sofa and a low table under the panelled ceiling — a sitting room that happens to have a bed in it.
Lamps either side, drapes drawn back from the window: the last light you will turn off.
The washroom
A floating vanity against dark stone, mirrored the full width.
A tub beneath a screened window. Light in, and nobody looking back.
04
Manasbal
the lotus lake
The full width of it — sofa, low table, and the bed far enough off to feel like another room.
Morning light at the window, and no particular reason to get up and meet it.
A rug, a console, somewhere to put your feet up. An evening in, by choice.
The washroom
A walk-in shower in dark stone, with the vanity alongside it.
The tub beneath the screened window, gold with it at five in the afternoon.
