Cottages by the river.

The family had been coming to this bend of the river for as long as anyone can remember. Summers spent watching the light come down off the Zabarwans, the willows trailing in the water, the whole valley going quiet around seven. Amin Kolu's father kept returning to the same thought: that people came to Kashmir, saw all of this from the road, and drove on. There ought to be somewhere to stay. Right here.

He talked about it for years without building it, the way people do with the things they mean most. It fell to his son to put it up. Seven cottages and four suites set in the gardens the family has always walked, close enough to the water to hear it from the bed. The willows were already here, and so were the chinars. What was added was somewhere to sit, a fire to light when the evening turns, and a door you can leave open.

It is not a hotel doing an impression of a home. It is a family's stretch of riverbank with rooms on it, built to an idea that took a generation to get to — and the view they have been waking to all that time, yours for a few nights.
